When I searched for the Italian meaning for “Urus” this is what I got – A recently extinct long-horned European wild Ox. Okay so I can see why this name is suitable for a Hypercar manufacturer like #Lamborghini to name their latest creation, an SUV – #Urus! Makes perfect sense right? ….Wrong I think it should have been named after an animal that wasn’t extinct like…..Long Horned OX??
The launch date for the Lamborghini Urus is 2018, and the infamous Italian car manufacturer is already boasting that it will out pace any of its rivals in the Hybrid SUV segment market as the fastest. It will house a 4.0 ltr V8, twin-turbocharged power-train which will allow a super fast acceleration to 60mph in less than 4 secs. Close sources to Lamborghini say that they will produce a hybrid electric version to comply with future emissions policies to be implemented globally by the end of the decade, there will also be the usual petrol version but no noise yet about a diesel…. to dirty I guess!
So is it a cut above the rest in the Crossover SUV class?? Well if it can beat the Bentley Bentayga with its top acceleration of 0-60mph in 4.1 secs then it has beaten off one competitor, but what other rubrics will back the companies claim that it will be the best in its class – “The Ultimate Luxury mid Size SUV”
Here are the No.1’s in the top spot for the following Rubrics
– Comfort & smoothness of ride – BMW X5
– Roomiest with most Cargo Space – Ford Expedition El – with 130 cubic ft!
– Economical – Audi Q7 3.0 TDI
– Visual Looks – BMW X6
– Price Tag for the Lamborghini Urus – $150,000-$200,000 – eh here’s the top 10
Other reasons for an SUV to be developed by Lamborghini?
You might not know this but the Italian Government were very keen for the Sant’ Agata factory to increase output and their workforce, this providing other incentives for the manufacturer to take on and employ more locals – 500 FTE in all. With the planned production of the Urus, they will double their plant size from new the SUV orders (3000 per year) along with their average annual production output of 1400 Gallardos + Huracans and 1200 Aventadors.

So have I proved my statement? is it a cut above the rest or next best? As the table shows above the Land Rover – Range Rover is the most luxurious from research done and also the most expensive. But most people who will by that type of SUV are normally avid fans of Range Rover whilst the Lamborghini Urus might well win well rooted Lamborghini followers or customers looking for a new option in the SUV market. I think the ultimate test will be speed cross terrain with 4×4wd and 2wd against the likes of the Range Rover (which we know is probably the best on the market at the moment). Normal road speed will put the Urus a few hundred yards ahead done the road with its pickup. If Lamborghini really want to justify the price tag and build a formidable SUV to conquer the rest in the market I think it will need to top on – Normal Road Speed | 4×4 capabilities | Fuel Consumption + Hybrid Option | Aesthetics | Cabin Comfort | Road Handling oh – yeah the all important cargo space!!…….
